At The we have an excellent English as an Additional Language (EAL) department. The EAL department aims to equip pupils for whom English is not their first language with the necessary skills and confidence in the use of English Language to allow them to integrate successfully in their environment and access the School curriculum.
English Language Teaching
The English as an Additional Language department aims to equip pupils for whom English is not their first language with the necessary skills and confidence in the use of English Language to allow them to integrate successfully into their environment and access the School curriculum.
Whilst we expect our pupils to have a basic level of English on arrival, we have a range of different English programmes available to accommodate pupils with different levels of skills from across the globe. Applicants will need to sit assessment tests in English and Mathematics and take part in a video interview with the Principal.
English Skills
Our English language classes aim to support the students both linguistically and culturally, helping them to raise their communication and social skills. We aim to build our pupils’ confidence and ability to communicate effectively. Lessons focus on developing speaking, writing, listening and reading skills.
We embed students into the heart of a traditional English community in school, in boarding and in community activities. This provides pupils with many opportunities to practise their English skills beyond the classroom.
EAL Lessons
EAL lessons make up a major part of the curriculum with the aim of making the British Curriculum accessible to international students. EAL lessons are led by a well-qualified and experienced EAL teacher. Core EAL tuition is taught in small groups. Lessons prepare students with the opportunity to take external EAL exams, including Key English Test (KET), and the Preliminary English Test (PET). Older pupils also have the opportunity to sit English iGCSE, or the internationally recognised Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE) examination.
“EAL students attain above worldwide average results in IGCSE examinations.”

Intensive English
The Mount’s Intensive English (IE) Courses are designed to provide intensive preparation for full-time UK education, they are aimed at pupils who need a little more support before entering core lessons. Girls take part in UK lessons alongside additional EAL support. They work with a specialist EAL tutor to improve all their academic skills. They are assessed weekly to track their progress. Intensive English programmes are also offered to prepare international students to study GCSEs or A Levels.
English Language School
We also run intensive English courses in the School holidays. Our Intensive English Summer Schools are a chance for pupils to prepare for study in the UK or improve their language skills with academically intensive but fun and interactive lessons in their English, core curriculum and main options choices.
